In a tragic incident, three persons, including two policemen, drowned in the Yamuna river in Kishunpur police station area of Fatehpur late Saturday evening.
The deceased included a police sub-inspector, a constable and a local fisherman. The bodies could be fished out by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) divers only on Sunday morning and were sent for autopsy.
As per reports, Sub-Inspector Ramjeet Yadav, incharge of Chandapur outpost of Kishunpur, and constable Shashikant learnt that people were violating lockdown and crossing the Yamuna river at Sanghauli ghat on Saturday evening.
To verify the information, they reached the ghat and found local fisherman Ravi aka Raju catching fish on his boat. They asked Ravi to help them to go to the other bank of the river in Banda district. After verifying facts in Banda, while they were returning, a storm accompanied by heavy rains lashed the area. Trapped mid-stream in the inclement weather, the ill-fated boat capsized and the three occupants drowned.
Superintendent of Police of Fathepur, Prashant Verma, said that after learning of the incident, several teams were rushed to the spot and local divers were engaged to launch a rescue operation. However, due to heavy rains and poor visibility, the operation had to be delayed till flash lights could be arranged. The rescue operation could pick up only on Sunday morning when the NDRF divers reached the spot and managed to fish out the bodies of all three victims.
Ramjeet Yadav was a native of Jaunpur and Shashikant hailed from Ghazipur.
Their families were informed about the tragedy and their bodies were handed over to them for last rites.
