Social activists and IPS officer Amitabh Thakur on Tuesday wrote a letter to the President of India, requesting him to use his authority under Section 23 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 to remove accused Justice (Retd) AK Ganguly from the post of Chairman of West Bengal Human Rights Commission.
Thakur said after clear indictment by the three-judge inquiry committee of the Supreme Court and the coming into public of the intern’s affidavit, there was no doubt regarding his “unwelcome behaviour (unwelcome verbal/non-verbal conduct of sexual nature)”.
In the letter, Thakur has said that what is more disturbing and disgusting is the fact that even after these facts have come out in the open, Justice (Retd) Ganguly is behaving more like a “hardened criminal” and searching for technicalities, which is against the dignity of a retired judge of Supreme Court.
He stated that all these issues come under the category of proved misbehaviour for which the President should remove Justice (Retd) Ganguly in the interest of justice, under the provisions of Section 23(1A) of the PHR Act after calling the three-member inquiry report from the Chief Justice of India.
