Tension rises to fill the post of DGP

Race for new state Director General of Police is becoming moreeye-catching each passing day as the retirement of its present DGP Al Banerjee on December 31 comes closer. Though the government is yet to announce the new DGP of the state, there are hectic activities and lobbying in the political circles for this coveted post.

Sources in the government said, senior-most IPS Praveen Singh and V KGupta are the close contenders for the DGP’s post but the government can go in for other choices as well even these two officers have a clean record. What mystifies the clear picture is the delay in Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) meeting which is slated on January 1. “Had the date of DPC fall before or on 31 December, there would be more officers for the post. In that case the race for the coveted post would have become more interesting and also the government would have several choices,’ sources said.

They said the government can appoint a ‘care-taking’ DGP and wait forthe cadre review in January next when Jagmohan Yadav could get the DG’s post. “Yadav is close to the government and he could get to the DGP post but for making him the DGP, the government will have to wait for the cadre review by the Centre,’ they said. DG AK Jain, who will retire on March 31, 2015 and Surya Kumar Shukla, who will be promoted to DG rank after the retirement of Banerjee and DG Homeguard Ranjan Dwivedi were also trying their luck for the highest post.

Banerjee, a 1979 cadre officer, became the DGP on March 1, 2014 taking the baton from Rizwan Ahmed. That time too, Ranjan Dwivedi was a contender. On January 1, 18 senior Indian Police Services (IPS) officers of the state are slated to be promoted with 7 each from IG to ADG level and DIG to IG level while four will be promoted from SSP to DIG level.
