SP willing to lead INDIA in UP

In a recent conference of the opposition alliance held in Bengaluru, major political parties from Uttar Pradesh reached unanimous agreement on the implementation of a caste-wise census. Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party expressed its willingness to lead the alliance in the state.

On the other hand, the Rashtriya Lok Dal advised larger parties to maintain trust with smaller regional parties to sustain the alliance while Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) emphasised on prioritising the interests of Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

During the Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) conference, it was acknowledged that there might be differences among alliance constituents but they can effectively challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, stressed the importance of unity, expressing the party’s commitment to a collective approach.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party’s chief general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav highlighted the significance of fighting the Lok Sabha elections under the leadership of the state with strong regional influence.

The Samajwadi Party leaders made it clear that they wanted a prominent role in seat sharing in Uttar Pradesh among the alliance partners.

Jayant Chaudhary of Rashtriya Lok Dal expressed concerns during the meeting that national parties often seek support from smaller regional parties before elections but fail to give priority to them afterwards. Sources revealed that without naming Samajwadi Party, Jayant emphasised the need for big parties to maintain trust and avoid sidelining smaller parties once the elections get over.

Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) national general secretary Pankaj Niranjan asserted that INDIA must fulfill the aspirations of OBCs.

While this conference did not directly discuss the seat-sharing formula, leaders engaged in separate discussions on the matter. It is believed that the Congress may agree to contest around 15-20 Lok Sabha seats under the alliance in Uttar Pradesh, with the Samajwadi Party potentially taking responsibility for seat-sharing among the remaining allies.

Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav drew a comparison between the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the story of ‘Alibaba and the Forty Thieves’. In a tweet, he remarked, “If they had added two more, 38+2=40 would have been completed... Everyone must have heard that old story!”

He emphasised that a significant majority of the population stands against the BJP and stated that the movement to eradicate the BJP will be remembered in Bengaluru.

“As the Lok Sabha elections draw nearer, the opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh seeks to consolidate its strength and present a united front against the ruling BJP. The upcoming months are crucial as parties navigate seat-sharing agreements and strategise their campaigns to challenge BJP’s hold on power,” Nomita P Kumar of the Giri Institute of Development Studies said.
