Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan, while campaigning for Azamgarh Lok Sabha bypoll, said on Saturday that this election would not change the government but go a long way in protecting democracy and the minority community.
Campaigning for Samajwadi Party candidate Dharmendra Yadav, Azam Khan launched broadside against the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging that he survived a conspiracy to eliminate him while he was in jail.
Azam Khan was released from jail in May after 27 months of imprisonment.
Khan said while in jail he had two options -- either to commit suicide or surrender before the BJP -- and he declined both. He asked the Samajwadi Party cadre to close ranks and ensure that the party emerged victorious in the Lok Sabha bypolls in Rampur and Azamgarh.
Urging the electorate of Azamgarh to ensure the victory of the SP candidate, Azam Khan said, “The results of the by-polls to two Lok Sabha seats –Rampur and Azamgarh – will not impact the BJP government at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh but the victory of the SP candidates will certainly send a strong message for strengthening democracy and protecting the minority community,”
