An encouraging response from the people has forced Samajwadi Party to extend its membership drive by a fortnight as party leadership claimed that people fed up with present government are joining SP.
SP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhry said that a special campaign was launched to enroll members at the district and village level and till June 15 over 1 crore people have enrolled as SP member.
“Enthused with the encouraging response from the people the party has decided to extend the membership drive by another fortnight. It will now continue till June 30,” he said in a written statement here on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a Samajwadi Party delegation led by leader of Opposition in the UP Vidhan Sabha Ram Govind Chaudhry submitted a memorandum to Governor Ram Naik alleging that BJP has unleashed anti-farmers policies across India in general and in Uttar Pradesh in particular.
“Since BJP has come to power farmers are feeling neglected. The BJP government has launched policies that are pro industrialists and are anti farmers. Instead of extending help to the farmers the BJP government at the centre has waived of Rs 1 lakh crore of 50 industrial houses,” the SP members said
He said the farmers are not getting remunerative prices of their produce. During election the BJP had promised that it will ensure that farmers’ income will double but the present government has not initiated any step in this direction.
“In comparison the Samajwadi Party government of Akhilesh Yadav was pro farmers and took decisions that helped them in increasing their income,” he said.
The other members of the delegation were leader of opposition in State Council Ahmad Hasan, state President Naresh Uttam and former cabinet minister rajendra Chaudhry.
