Samajwadi Party president and leader of opposition in UP assembly, Akhilesh Yadav, said that his party would play the role of an effective opposition and ensure accountability of the Yogi Adityanath government.
"Only the benches in the assembly have changed. Earlier we used to sit on the treasury benches when in government, now we will sit in the opposition. I want to assure that Samajwadi Party will play the role of a constructive opposition with the objective of ensuring accountability of the Yogi government,” Akhilesh said after taking oath as MLA in Lucknow on Monday .
"Samajwadi Party will not let the government off the hook and we will raise all issues concerning the common people. We will launch a sustained struggle from `sadan’ (assembly) to 'sadak" (street)," he said.
Akhilesh Yadav was elected to Lok Sabha from Azamgarh in 2019 and in November last year, he announced that he had no plans to contest the 2022 UP assembly elections. He was, however, forced to change the stance as the Bharatiya Janata Party announced to field Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur.
Akhilesh contested from Karhal assembly constituency in Mainpuri and after winning the poll he resigned his Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat.
