Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan said on Friday that his party supported what was written in the Quran.
As the Union government tabled the Triple Talaq Bill in the Lok Sabha to ban the practice of instant triple talaq, the SP lawmaker said, “Our stand is similar to what is written in Quran.”
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 is the first bill to be introduced in the 17th Lok Sabha by the Narendra Modi government in its second term. The bill seeks to replace an ordinance issued by the previous government in February. Last year, the bill to ban instant triple talaq was passed in the Lok Sabha but remained pending in the Rajya Sabha till the Lok Sabha was dissolved.
“No religion has given more rights to women than Islam 1,500 years ago. Islam is the first to have given the right to equality to women. Today we witness the lowest divorce rate and minimum cases of violence against Muslim women. Women are not burnt or killed,” Azam Khan said in Rampur on Friday.
“Triple talaq is a religious issue, not a political one and nothing is supreme for a Muslim than Quran. On marriage, on divorce, for everything, the Quran has clear instructions and we follow it,” he added.
