Samajwadi Party is gearing for a state-wide stir against the withdrawal of high currency notes by the Union government.

Ahead of the crucial Assembly elections, the party wishes to tap the rising discontent among people particularly in rural areas and the traders over the Centre's move.

State SP chief Shivpal Yadav said in Unnao on Wednesday that the party cadres would take to the streets against the Centre's decision to demonetise highvalue notes. He said that despite repeated claims of the Union government and Reserve Bank of India, there has been no let up in the crisis caused due to the sudden withdrawal of the high value notes.

Yadav said that the Union government's priority has been to supply new currency notes to big cities ignoring the semi-urban and rural areas. He said that the crisis being faced by the people is unprecedented and its effec havebecome all the more pronounced due to the ongoing marriage season and sowing of the Rabi crop.

The state SP chief said that to add salt to the injury of farmers and rural people, the RBI has restrained district co-operative banks (DCBs) from exchanging old currency notes with the new ones.

Yadav said that a large number of DCB branches are located in rural and semi-urban areas and acted as the only link of farmers with monetised economy. The RBI decision against the DCBs has not only threatened the existence of these banks, but has also added to hardships of farmers and rural people.
