Former minister and Samajwadi Party MLA from Machhlishahr, Jagdish Sonkar’s brother Deepchand sent shock waves in Jaunpur when he and his cronies brutally attacked some women with sticks and rods over a land dispute on Friday.

Luckily, a local recorded the SP leader’s excesses on his mobile phone and later uploaded the clip on social network site causing huge embarrassment to the SP MLA and also senior police officers.

Confirming the incident, Superintendent of Police of Jaunpur, Dinesh Pal Singh, said that a case was registered in this regard and police teams were raiding the hideouts of the accused.

The district police chief said that inspector Rajesh Yadav and sub-inspectors Jagdish Yadav, Kaushlendra Dubey and Prabhu Dayal of Sarai Khwaja police station were shifted to the Police Lines and circle officer of Sadar, Vinay Kumar Dwivedi was asked to enquire into the incident.

As per reports, a video showing Karanja Kala block pramukh Deepchand Sonkar and his aides beating up the women with sticks over a land dispute at Kakor Gahana village, went viral on Friday.

Deepchand happens to be the brother of SP MLA Jagdish Sonkar and the incident took place on December 14.

On the fateful day,  Sonkar forcibly tried to make a passage for himself on a plot and the women of the village objected to it. Despite being in the know of the land dispute, the local police preferred to look the other way and did not initiate action against the guilty.

When the video went viral, the district police chief reached the spot and initiated action immediately. An FIR was lodged against five people, including Deepchand Sonkar and four others. Four of the accused were later arrested while Deepchand was on the lam.

Taking the incident seriously, the Samajwadi Party brass expelled Deepchand Sonkar from the party.
