SP govt to present 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots probe report

The Samajwadi Party government is all set to table the much awaited probe report of the one member judicial commission, headed by Justice (Retd) Vishnu Sahai in connection with 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, in the state assembly.

The decision to table the report was taken at a cabinet meeting that was held by circulation.

However, the date is not fixed for its tabling but it could be done in the ongoing budget session as the assembly would sit from March 4-8 to approve the budget proposals for the next fiscal, official sources said here on Wednesday.

The judicial commission had submitted its final report to the state government in September. It has given the ruling Samajwadi Party a clean chit but has blamed state BJP leaders for the riots. It has also appreciated the UP government for taking prompt action to control the situation.

The probe report has reportedly said it was a YouTube clip clandestinely circulated by some leaders that led to one of the bloodiest riots in UP’s recent history. The probe report also blames the Muzaffarnagar district administration of laxity in its part to control the situation.

The probe suggests that as FIRs have been registered against  most of the guilty people hence there is no need for any fresh case against them.

However, BJP MlA Sangeet Singh Som, who was booked under National Secretary Act (NSA) along with another party MlA Suresh Rana for the riots, had questioned the probe report terming it a biased one and said it was a probe done by the Samajwadi Party.

“When the judicial Commission did not take our statements in the riots, how can it blame us for riots,” he said while charging that it was an one-sided probe meant to save the ruling party.

The one-man judicial commission was set up on September 9, 2013 and it took over two years to submit its report. The commission had cross examined 377 people including 100 senior officials during its probe.

The riots had claimed 64 lives and forced over 50,000 to live in refugee camps for weeks.
