SP demands repoll in Rampur

Published on:

Samajwadi Party has demanded the cancellation of the election in Rampur assembly constituency and repoll there.

The polling for the by-election to Rampur assembly constituency was held on December 5 and counting of votes is scheduled to be held on Thursday.

SP chief whip in UP assembly, Manoj Pandey, alleged that the polling in Mainpuri Lok Sabha and two assembly seats of Rampur Sadar and Khatauli was a mockery of democracy.

SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav, in a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, said that the voter turnout was only 34 per cent on December 5, which was too low as compared to the last several elections to the Rampur Sadar assembly seat. He said the low voter turnout was sufficient reason for a repoll in Rampur.

Ram Gopal Yadav alleged that large-scale irregularities were committed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the district administration of Rampur acted as the polling agent of the ruling party.

He alleged that a large number of voters were prevented from casting their votes and a reign of terror was unleashed against the common people and SP cadre leading to injury of a large number of party workers.

Ram Gopal Yadav attached photographs of police brutality in Rampur as evidence with his letter.

Meanwhile, SP MLA Manoj Pandey said here on Wednesday that police brutality in Rampur was the main reason for the low voter turnout in the assembly constituency.

He demanded a probe by the Election Commission into the police brutality and irregularities committed at Mainpuri, Rampur and Khatauli at the instance of the district administration.

Listing the instances of non-democratic conduct of the Yogi Adityanath government, the SP leader said that the Business Advisory Committee of the UP assembly had approved the business for three sittings of the assembly yet the House was adjourned sine die after two sittings.

He said many issues related to the problems of the common man were listed for debate and several members of opposition were to raise issues on the third day but that could not be taken up as the House was adjourned.

Accusing the Yogi Adityanath government of murdering democracy, he said the BJP government was not interested in holding the session of the House to escape from accountability towards the people.

He said even as nine months had passed since the 18th UP assembly was constituted in March this year, the House committees were yet to be constituted by Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana. He said the most important committee was the Public Accounts Committee which examined the Comptroller and Auditor General’s reports and the entire financial record of the state government.

Accusing the BJP-led UP government of deliberately subverting the constitutional political order, Pandey said, “It is for the first time in the last seven decades that the committees of the state assembly have not been constituted even nine months after the new assembly was constituted.”
