Sonia attacks Modi over his 'neech' barb

Congress president Sonia Gandhi made a concentrated attack on Bharatiya Janta Party’s (BJP) PM candidate Narendra Modi, particularly over his `neech’ (low-level) barb, and claimed that such leaders does not deserved to be in national politics.

“Unkii neech rajnitik soch aur batein unko aur desh ko shobha nahi detii (their low-level politics and thinking suits neither them nor the country),” asserted Sonia Gandhi while accusing Gujrat CM of using derogatory remarks against her husband Rajeev Gandhi who had sacrificed his life for this nation.

Sonia also invoked former Prime Minister and ailing BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee to hit out at Modi, saying Vajpayee and other former PMs maintained the dignity of the post but the way Modi criticised Rajiv Gandhi could not be termed anything but petty. The BJP Prime Ministerial candidate had said Rajiv, a former PM, had publicly humiliated a Congress chief minister when he was the party’s general secretary to claim it was the ruling party leaders who practiced the politics of anger and arrogance and not him. ``Modi ne mere pati ka apman kiya hai”, Sonia quoted while claiming that the people of UP would teach BJP’s PM candidate a befitting lesson for such barbs.

Sonia made above comments while addressing a rally at Kushinagar in favour of Union Minister of State for Home R P N Singh, on Thursday afternoon. She further targeted the Gujarat model of progress and said politics can’t be done by showing a false picture of development. ``Wrong facts and a concocted picture have been highlighted through media about Gujrat model”, Congress president alleged while accusing Modi of putting wrong facts before the public to misguide and attract them towards BJP. She lambasted his “false” claims about Gujarat’s development and said 40 percent people in the state’s villages do not get water for drinking and irrigation. Gujarat, she said hitting out at the state’s CM, still considers those earning below a paltry sum of Rs 11 per day as poor and even by such low base over 40 lakh families there are poor. “If this becomes the condition of the whole country, then you can understand what will happen,” she said.

She warned the people against supporting BJP, saying the Opposition party is threatening to stop pro-poor schemes, if they come to power.

“On one side you have people who are divisive, who don’t hear the oppressed. On the other side is secular Congress,” she said. Sonia also addressed an election meeting at Salempur later in the evening.
