Union minister and senior BJP leader Smriti Irani on Tuesday questioned if Congress leader Rahul Gandhi would actually contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi. She hit back at Congress leader Ajay Rai for a statement to this effect.
Rai, while leading a regional Bharat Jodo Yatra in Amethi, recently claimed that Rahul Gandhi would contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi parliamentary constituency. He reiterated it at a rally in Sonebhadra on Monday and also made a controversial remark — “Smriti Irani (who is at present MP from Amethi) goes there for publicity and to show her ‘latke jhatke’.”
The BJP MP from Amethi directly attacked Rahul Gandhi through a tweet. “I have heard Rahul Gandhi ji, that you have made an announcement to contest from Amethi in 2024 in an indecent manner from one of your senior leaders. So can I be sure that you will contest from Amethi? Will you not run to the second seat? Aren’t you afraid.”
“PS: You & Mummy ji need to get your misogynistic goons a new speech writer,” she added.
In the 2019 LS polls, Smriti had defeated Rahul Gandhi from Amethi. Rahul had contested from two seats — Amethi and Wayanad in Kerala. He lost from Amethi but won from Wayanad.
