Monkey business by a monkey kept the entire police station on the run in Baghpat after it took away the mobile phone of the station house officer of Binauli police station on Thursday morning.
It took more than two hours and a chase of several kilometers by the cops to succeed in getting back the mobile phone after the monkey finally abandoned the handset and escaped.
Interestingly, even the office of the director general of police (DGP) learnt of the incident and remained in touch with the senior officers until the mobile phone was recovered by the police.
Reports said that like many other districts, Baghpat too is facing the monkey menace. On Thursday morning, however, it was the turn of the men in khaki to get a taste of the simian’s monkey business when it entered the Binauli police station campus and first threw some records. As the cops tried to chase the monkey away, it entered the residence of Station House Officer of Binauli police station, Devendra Kumar, who was having breakfast. In the meantime, the money took his mobile phone and escaped.
Seeing the monkey taking away his mobile which had his official CUG number, Kumar rushed behind the monkey to snatch his mobile. When his efforts failed, he raised an alarm and summoned his subordinates. Soon one could see dozens of cops running after the fleeing monkey in a desperate effort to get back the mobile phone of the SHO.
Not to be left behind in this ‘monkey business’, some local youths grabbed the opportunity and made a video clip of cops running behind the monkey and made it viral on social media after which the DGP office too learnt about the incident.
The cops even played a trick by making several calls on the SHO’s mobile phone, hoping that the caller tune would scare the monkey and it would throw the instrument. But instead of getting scared, the monkey seemed to enjoy the music.
The hapless cops, before whom even hardened criminals surrender in fear of ‘encounter’, finally sought the help of the people of the village to get back the mobile phone from the monkey.
The chase came to an end when the monkey, who was running from one tree to another and from one house to another, finally abandoned the mobile phone and escaped.
The Baghpat police finally informed the DGP office about the recovery of the mobile phone and heaved a sigh of relief.
