A sub-inspector has been suspended while a station house officer sent to police lines for allegedly assaulting a salesman of a liquor shop in Sikheda area of Muzaffarnagar, police said on Tuesday.

According to a complaint filed by Anit Kumar, he was beaten by the two policemen after he refused to give them two cartons of liquor for free on Monday evening. Muzaffarnagar SSP Vineet Jaiswal took action against the SHO for misbehaving and assaulting the salesman. It was also alleged that the SHO forcibly took away two cartons filled with liquor bottles from the shop.

The incident was captured in a CCTV camera and it led to action against the SHO. The SSP then asked New Mandi CO Himanshu Gaurav to investigate the matter, sources said.

“The incident happened a day ago. It was seen in the video that the SHO reached the spot and misbehaved with the liquor shop salesman. He also slapped the salesman. While sub-inspector Ashok Bhardwaj was suspended, SHO Rakesh Kumar was sent to police lines,” SSP Vineet Jaiswal said.

Meanwhile, several liquor shopowners staged a protest and demanded justice for the victim.
