Expressing concern about the deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, the AICC spokesman Shakil Ahmad raised accusing finger on the mysterious death of alleged terrorist Khail Mujahid in judicial custody.
" The law and order situation in UP is very bad and the figures of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) were enough proof about the law and order situation in the UP"
he said while talking to mediapersons in the state capital on Sunday. Shakil Ahmad said the death of Khalid in judicial custody was fishy. "How can the Chief Minister claim that
the death was due to illness before the post-mortem of the body" he questioned adding that the Congress wants an impartial probe into the death of Khalid and was hopeful that CBI would take over the probe as recommended by the UP government.
Commenting on the Congress view on whether the terror accused, if they are innocent will be let-off, the AICC spokesman said tht in Karnatak assembly elections, the Congress manifesto too promised to review the cases of innocents, women and children lodged under terror cases. "We have promised to set up a commission under a retired High Court judge to review cases and set up fast track court for speedy trial." Ahmad said.
Mentioning about the recent issue of the autonomy to the CBI, the Congress spokesperson said on December 18,1997, the Supreme Court had directed for the autonomy of the CBI in a case related to Vinit Narain versus government but the BJP government shelved the order after coming to power on March 19,1998. " Now the BJP is raising the issue of CBI's autonomy after ignoring the same during its regime" he alleged.
