Seven policemen, including a sub-inspector of Rae Bareli police, have been placed under suspension after two hardened criminals of Irani gang, arrested in a police encounter, escaped from the Trauma Centre of King George's Medical University here on Wednesday.

The police team allegedly remained mute spectators as the criminals escaped from their custody.

Taking stern action in the matter, Rae Bareli’s Superintendent of Police Alok Priyadarshi suspended all the seven policemen deployed at the hospital.

Last Saturday, the cops of Rae Bareli and the local Special Operation Group (SOG) had an encounter with criminals near Kanha village of Dalmau Kotwali, in which four hardened criminals including Irfan and Inzamam of Bada village, Shahganj district Jaunpur were caught. Inzamam and Irfan were shot in the leg. Their treatment was going on in the district hospital. Both were referred to the Trauma Center in Lucknow on Tuesday evening.

To keep an eye on them. The Rae Bareli district police chief had deployed Sub-Inspector Mohit Kumar, head constable, Lalsa Chauhan, constables Mukesh Sahu, Mahesh Singh, Shakti Singh, Sachin Gautam and Anand Kumar, all posted at Dalmau police station.

On Wednesday morning, both the criminals escaped by dodging the police team.

When this information came to the knowledge of the Rae Bareli district police chief, he again deployed the SOG to trace out the criminals and arrest them. Both the criminals have plaster cast on their feet. Both went out of KGMU limping. The footage of both has also been found in the CCTV camera installed in KGMU. The inspector said that CCTV cameras installed on the main roads outside KGMU were being scanned.

Rae Bareli SP Alok Priyadarshi said that all the cops deployed for security were placed under suspension and further action would be taken against them on the basis of the inquiry report.

A case was also registered in this regard by the police and all efforts were being made to nab Inzamam and Irfan.

It may be mentioned that on June 23, a Lucknow businessman was robbed of Rs 1 lakh in cash after opening fire on him near Mansa Devi. With the help of the CCTV footage, the police started searching for the criminals and last Friday, during an encounter in the Salon area of Rae Bareli, two criminals were held. They were identified as Nisar Hussain, resident of Mehdibagh in Farrukhabad and Tahir Ali of Bhanpur police station, near Chola Mandir in Bhopal.

When the criminal histories of the duo were searched, it was found that both were members of the Irani gang.

During their interrogation, the names of four other gang members surfaced and they were caught in an encounter by Rae Bareli police last Saturday. They included Inzamam and Irfan, who have escaped from the Trauma Centre.
