Self-sacrifice by woman in a Meerut temple

Published on:

In what was termed as a case of ‘self-sacrifice’, the body of a woman with her throat slit was found hanging inside a temple under Kharkhoda police station limits in Meerut on Tuesday evening, sending shock waves in the area.

But by the time, the police and senior officers reached the temple to probe the incident, the kin of the deceased cremated her body.

Meerut's Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhakar Chaudhary visited the spot after police came to know that a woman had committed suicide inside the temple.

As per reports, a 22-year-old post-graduate student used to frequent a local temple at Kharkhaunda regularly. On Monday afternoon, she told her family members about going to the temple to perform pooja and left home. When she did not return home till late in the night, the family started looking for her. As some people had seen her going towards the temple, the family members went there to check out and found the temple doors locked from inside. As they somehow entered the temple, they found her blood-soaked body hanging. There were blood spots on the idol and earthen lamp below the place where her body was found. Her throat was also slit. The family members later brought her body down and cremated her mortal remains without informing the police.

The news of a woman sacrificing herself inside the temple spread like a wildfire in nearby villages after which police reached the spot. Cops checked the crime scene and questioned the woman's family members. A forensic team was also brought to collect evidence. Prima facie it appeared to be a case of superstition and self sacrifice.

Meanwhile in Greater Noida, three rag pickers, Vijay, Jiggo and Vijjo of Jewar, died after consuming liquor they found in a garbage dump in Aligarh's Tappal town.

"While collecting plastic and scrap, they found some liquor and drank it on Tuesday. However, soon after they returned home, they fell ill. Their families took them to Jewar primary health centre where Vijay died the same day. The other two were referred to the district hospital and later to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi where they succumbed on Wednesday. Further investigation is underway,” said DCP, Greater Noida, Abhishek.
