A woman depressed with the deaths of her husband and two sons within the last one year immolated herself in Banda.
Her youngest son also suffered 60 percent burn injuries while trying to save her.
The incident took place in Mahua village of Banda district, police said Wednesday.
“Chaubi Devi (55) set herself ablaze in her room on Tuesday. Her son, Shankar, tried to save her and suffered burn injuries,” local SHO Baljeet Singh said.
Both were rushed to a hospital by family members where the woman was pronounced dead while the condition of her son was stable with 60 per cent burns, the SHO said.
The woman, according to the family members, was depressed after her eldest son killed himself and her youngest son died due to illness. Last year, the woman’s husband had died in an accident.
The SHO said the body was sent for post-mortem.
In another tragic incident in Ghazipur, a woman was found lying with critical burn injuries while her two children were found dead.
Reports said that the residents of Taranpur hamlet of Jangipur woke up in the wee hours of Wednesday after they heard screams coming from a house.
The villagers entered the house and found the woman, Sangeeta, lying in a critical condition while her two children — daughter Deepanjali (5) and son Divyanshu (3) — were lying dead.
The villagers rushed the woman to hospital where she is battling for her life.
The police suspect that the woman strangled both children to death and then tried to immolate herself.
Sangeeta’s husband, Shrawan Pal, who is a truck driver, has gone along with his brother to Kolkata to attend a function.
His wife and children were alone when the incident took place.
A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
In another incident reported from Hardoi, two workers were killed when the beam of the servant quarters of an under-construction hospital in the chief medical officer’s office collapsed on Wednesday.
Police sources said that over 12 workers were trying to complete shuttering after putting up the beam while constructing the servant quarters at the under-construction 100-bed hospital in the CMO office premises.
Meanwhile, the heavy beam collapsed on the ground and Sheikh and Salim Baig, residents of Lakhimpur Kheri, were trapped under it. They were rescued by other labourers working there and rushed to the district hospital. While one labourer succumbed to his injuries in Hardoi, another died in Lucknow.
Police are investigating the incident.
Following the incident, the contractor of the agency awarded the construction work absconded from the site.
