Saharanpur communal violence: SP demands judicial probe

Published on:

Samajwadi Party has demanded a judicial probe into the communal violence in Saharanpur and the arrest of BJP MP and MlA who were allegedly involved in incidents of vandalism at the official residence of SSP luv Kumar. The party had deputed a team comprising its MlAs to probe into the incident.

"The BJP MP and MlA acted like goondas. They ransacked the SSP's residence, forcing the police official’s wife and children to escape and hide in cowshed. This only shows the fear unleashed by the saffron brigade. The BJP leaders deliberately created violence to draw political mileage and to win elections," alleged SP president Akhilesh Yadav in lukcnow on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference along with the five-member fact-finding team, Akhilesh said, "For the last ten years, the district administration never permitted the yatra from this village apprehending violence. This year too, the administration had denied permission, yet the BJP leaders forcibly took out the yatra that led to the communal clash."

"The BJP ran a vicious campaign against our party during the Assembly elections and dubbed us as a party of goons. What has happened now. Are they performing our roleIJ The incident at Saharanpur is a black spot on democratic India. The BJP should be ashamed of itself for trying to protect the guilty MPs and the MlA who deliberately instigated the violence," said the SP chief.

The enquiry team of the Samajwadi Party visited Saharanpur after the communal violence during the shobha yatra to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar at Dudiya village on April 20. Saharanpur has been upgraded as a Municipal Corporation and Dudiya village has been included in the municipal limits of the city. Akhilesh appreciated the role of the police and SSP luv Kumar saying that they have done their duties.

The former CM said," It is a big challenge before the BJP government to control its rowdy supporters and leaders as the law and order situation in the state has nosedived. “If the BJP leaders really love Dr Ambedkar, then they should fulfil his dream rather than creating violence to draw political mileage for their vote bank politics," said Akhilesh Yadav.

Saharanpur SP MlA Sanjay Garg, who was the member of the team, said that bringing out a procession sans permission by the ruling party MP and MlAs was a serious breach of law and a threat to law and order.

"These goondas wearing saffron scarf are now threatening the common people of the state. The saffron scarf which is a symbol of religion, has now turned into a symbol of goonda in UP," alleged Garg.

The leader of the fact-finding team and former minister Mahboob Ali said, "It’s indeed sad to see that responsible functionaries of the BJP stooped to the level of threatening family members of the SSP of Saharanpur and ransacked his residence. Such acts of violence are a threat to democracy and the people should come forward to protest against such attitude."
