The Communist Party of India (ML) demanded that the 3-2 decision of the Supreme Court on 10 per cent reservation to economically weaker sections of the society be referred to a larger bench. The party said the decision was unfortunate and against the soul of the Indian Constitution.
In a statement, party’s state secretary Sudhakar Yadav said the reservation system is based on backwardness in terms of social, educational and historical basis in the constitution of our country and not on the basis of economic status.
“We had opposed the EWS reservation when it was being implemented in the country and we are again registering our protest,” he said.
Yadav said the annual income limit, which is Rs 8,000, was also whimsical. “The Union government is reducing the existing reservation percentage for the groups entitled as per the Indian constitution while making excuses,” he alleged.
