Reacting to India overtaking Britain to become the fifth largest economy in the world, former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and BSP president Mayawati on Monday said the real economic growth would be only when the income of the poor also increased.
The BSP chief tweeted, “India’s economy has overtaken Britain’s to become the fifth largest economy in the world, but it would have been a matter of satisfaction if the figures showed necessary improvement in the per capita income of about 140 crore poor people in India.”
“The per capita income of the people of Britain is about 20 times more than the people of India. If India manages to equal that feat, it will help in removing the country’s problems like poverty, unemployment and illiteracy,” Mayawati tweeted in Hindi.
She also said that most of the population of the country has lagged behind in poverty and low-income groups, which is of utmost importance and concern.
