The Meerut police on Saturday shot at one of the accused of rape and murder of a class 10 student.
The altercation took place when the accused was trying to escape from the police custody while being taken to the court. The accused, identified as Lakhan, and his aide Vikas were arrested earlier on Saturday morning.
As per the reports, Lakhan was shot in his leg and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Notably, the class 10 student was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by four men (two others are still absconding) while on way back from a tuition class. Her relatives, however, alleged that the girl was forced to consume a poisonous substance. The girl belonging to a village under the Sardhana Kotwali area died in the hospital during the treatment.
Meerut's Superintendent of Police (Rural) Keshav Kumar said four youths were involved in abducting and raping the girl and the police, on the basis of a suicide note left by the girl, arrested two of the accused and had launched a manhunt to nab the other two.
In her suicide note, the girl had named four men, including Lakhan and Vikas from a neighbouring village, besides two others.
Meanwhile, three men in Shahjahanpur district were detained in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 25-year-old woman, officials said on Saturday.
The trio has been accused of gang-raping the woman on March 22 after abducting her from her house. The incident occurred in a village under Mirzapur police station limits.
On March 22, the woman was allegedly abducted by the accused from the roof of her house after which they took turns to rape her. Soon after, the victim escaped from their custody and reached her house, Jalalabad Circle Officer (CO) Massa Singh said.
The incident came to light when the victim narrated her ordeal to her husband, when he returned from Delhi on Holi. Following this, a case of gang-rape was registered on Friday. Police detained the three accused on Friday and they are being questioned. The woman was sent for a medical examination.
In Aligarh, a man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping a minor Dalit girl inside a factory in a village on Holi, police said.
The minor girl's father works as a labourer at a brick kiln owned by a relative of the accused. Narrating the incident, a senior police officer said the accused allegedly lured the girl into an office on the factory premises on the day of Holi and raped her.
When her father learnt about it and confronted the owners of the brick kiln, they allegedly assaulted him and threatened him against going to the police. The girl's father managed to contact a labour leader who filed an online complaint two days ago. Responding to the complaint, a police team booked the accused, who is from Mathura, and launched a hunt to nab him on Friday.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kalanidhi Naithani said the police successfully traced the whereabouts of the accused and arrested him on Saturday.
