Reacting strongly to a statue of former PM Indira Gandhi in Muzaffaranagar, state Congress chief Raj Babbar exhorted party workers to protest against the government for failing to protect statues of political icons.

Earlier, a statue of Rajeev Gandhi was damaged in Mirzapur and after Raj Babbar spearheaded a demonstration against the government, the local police arrested half a dozen persons involved in the crime.

UP Congress spokesman Krishnakant Pandey said that Raj Babbar would go to Muzaffarnagar to demonstrate and demand arrest of the culprits responsible for the act in Khatauli area of the district. Babbar also alerted Congressmen from Saharanpur, Shamli, Hapur, Ghaziabad, Noida, Meerut etc to take to the streets and join him in the protest on Saturday. Babbar will leave from New Delhi for Muzaffarnagar where he will stage a protest against the state government for failing to protect statues of leaders.

Meanwhile in Muzaffarnagar, in a probable case of honour killing, a 30-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her brother at Subhash Nagar locality on Thursday night.

Following a heated argument with her sister, Kamil killed her and later walked to New Mandi police station and confessed to killing his sister after an argument over her ‘unbecoming activities’ which tarnished the ‘family’s honour’.

In Mathura, five persons were killed when a car rammed into a divider on Noida-Agra Yamuna Expressway early on Friday morning. The accident occurred as the driver apparently dozed off at the wheel. The victims were residents of ludhiana.

“While four persons died on the spot, the fifth succumbed to injuries in a district hospital,” SSP Mathura Vinod Kumar Mishra said.
