Union Health minister Dr Harashvarshan has ordered a high level probe into the irregularities including use of low quality material in construction of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rae Bareli, the parliamentary constituency of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
Dr Harshvardhan had asked Union Health Secretary to carry out the probe, BJP leader and senior Supreme Court lawyer Ajay Agarwal told reporters here on Sunday.
The Union Health minister took the action after Agarwal, who lost to Sonia Gandhi in the lok Sabha elections, met him at New Delhi and apprised him about the irregularities.
Agarwal said that the Union Health minister has assured him that the AIIMS project has not been scrapped and Dr Harshavardhan himself will visit the spot next month.
The Rs 147 crore for the project has been sanctioned by the Centre ,which earlier faced several hurdles and was launched by Sonia Gandhi just before the lok Sabha elections.
Agarwal said that he has reported about low quality of bricks, iron rods and other material being used in the construction. “The Union health minister has assured me that a thorough probe would be done on my complaint,” he added.
UP government had transferred 97.69 acres of land to the central government for setting up AIIMS in Rae Bareli one year back. The institute will come up near the closed Nandganj Sihori
Sugar Mill at Munshiganj, five kilometres from Rae Bareli city on the lucknow-Allahabad highway. The 90-year lease deed of the land was registered in favour of the union health and family welfare ministry at the district registration office.
