The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday questioned Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav over his promise to provide free electricity in Uttar Pradesh with senior party leader Dharmendra Pradhan asking what the former chief minister had done when he headed the state government.
“Those who gave free gundaraj when in power are now talking of providing free electricity and also claiming that they will construct the Ram temple. People know that police had fired on Ram bhakts during the Samajwadi Party rule,” tweeted Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
"The Congress was in power in the state for forty years. The Samajwadi Party has ruled thrice. Akhilesh Yadav was chief minister for five years. Why was electricity not made free?" Pradhan asked.
Pradhan is the BJP's election in charge for Uttar Pradesh.
He further hit out at the SP, claiming that when the opposition party was ruling the state, barring Mohammad Azam Khan's Rampur and Saifai, the native place of Akhilesh Yadav, the entire state faced an erratic electric supply.
Earlier, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, while expressing New Year wishes to the people, announced that on returning to power his party would make up to 300 units of electricity free for households. He also said that power supply for irrigation would also be made free.
The BJP leader further attacked SP claiming that its credibility was low and it would again be defeated at the husting.
