Power sector employees to go on an indefinite strike

The employee unions of power sector, gearing up for indefinite work boycott against privatisation of power distribution in four mega cities from May 29, appealed chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday to intervene so that consumers are not faced to prolonged outages in this scorching summer.

During talks with UP Power Corporation limited (UPPCl) management, the office bearers of employee unions stressing that unions would not relent until decision to privatise distribution in UP was rolled back. In case of work boycott only government will be responsible for inconvenience to consumers.

During the talks held at Shakti Bhawan, power corporation headquarters, Vidyut Karmchari Samyukta Sangharsh Samiti (VKSSS) office bearers asked the power corporation managing director, AP Mishra to brief the government about apprehensions of power employees regarding privatisation so that clash could be averted.

Notably on May 29 the tenders for appointment of a consultant to suggest method of privatisation are to be opened and on the same day employee unions are launching their indefinite work boycott.

The office bearers said, the government was privatising the power distribution in four cities Kanpur, Varanasi, Ghaziabad and Meerut where revenue realisation was already better. The move by government has raised doubt regarding the real intention behind privatisation.

The office bearers also demanded government to make its privatisation policy public.
