Following the talks with UP Power Corporation limited (UPPCl) management on Friday, the power employee unions, giving government one week time to rethink over privatisation in power sector, postponed indefinite work boycott for a week time.

Now employee unions under aegis of Vidyut Karmchari Sangharash Samiti (VKSS) will organise protest day on May 13 and if decision to privatise power distribution in four mega cities was not rolled back by state government the employees, engineers of all power discoms in UP will resort to indefinite work boycott from May 20, said the VKSS convenor Shailendra Dubey on Friday.

In meeting with leaders of power employee unions, held at Shakti Bhawan in state capital, the UPPCl managing director, AP Mishra said, the decision of privatising power distribution in four cities of UP has been taken under financial restructuring plan (FRP) by central government.

The MD power corporation told employee leaders, now tenders for appointment of the consultant, pertaining to privatisation plan, will be opened on May 20 instead of May 13 as announced earlier. In view of new date for opening tenders, the employee unions decided changing the time of agitation.

Demanding the chief minister to intervene in to situation, the VKSS office bearers said, the government must make its policy for privatisation public since the power distribution was being privatised in those cities only which power discoms were earning profits owing to better revenue realisation.

The office bearers said, if work boycott causes inconvenience to public only government will be responsible.
