PGV raises  farmers’ issue

After her vitriolic attack on Yogi Adityanath government over Sonbhadra massacre, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra continued her tirade on Saturday, this time over farmers’ issues, and questioned the efficacy of farm and loan waiver schemes.

Priyanka cited a media report which said that five farmers had committed suicide in as many days in Bundelkhand’s Banda district.

“Farmers grow crops, don’t get the price for it. Famine occurs, compensation is not given,” Priyanka tweeted in Hindi.

“Farmers in Bundelkhand are getting threats of confiscation from banks everyday. What kind of farm policy and loan waiver scheme is it that farmers are left with no option but to commit suicide,” the Gandhi scion asked.

As per reports, Aryavrat Gramin Bank (formerly Allahabad Gramin Bank) has issued recovery notices to about 8,000 farmers who failed to repay their loans. About 1.10 lakh farmers from the region had taken loans from banks, but due to drought, they were facing acute financial crises and defaulted on loans.
