Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday took a swipe at PM Narendra Modi, saying people spend their final days in Banaras. PM Modi is on a two-day visit to Varanasi for the inauguration of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. Akhilesh Yadav made the remark during an interaction with mediapersons in his home town Saifai in Etawah.
“This is very good. PM Modi can stay there not just for one month, but for two or even three months. That is a place to stay. People spend their final days in Banaras,” he said.
While the reference was to the city's significance in Hindu culture, Akhilesh Yadav suggested in his remarks that the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh may be in its final days.
The SP chief went on to say that the BJP is lying before everyone but should not lie before god. He said that the cricket stadium in Etawah could have hosted the IPL if it was not for the slow pace of BJP’s development work. He also alleged that Etawah had been discriminated against by the ruling BJP government.
Earlier on Sunday, Akhilesh had claimed that the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project was approved during the term of his government in the state. “There is documentary evidence to prove it,” he told reporters in Lucknow.
Akhilesh later said in a tweet in Hindi, “The chronology of Kashi Vishwanath Corridor: Crores of rupees were allocated by the Samajwadi Party government. The SP government started the acquisition of the buildings for the purpose of the corridor. An honorarium was fixed for the temple staff. The ‘paidaljeevi’ (pedestrians) should tell why the cleanliness drive of the Varuna river undertaken by the SP government was stopped, and what happened to the Metro (rail)?”
