As incidents of crime against women continued unabated, opposition parties raised a shrill pitch against the Akhilesh Yadav Government.

A delegation of senior BJP leaders headed by state party president Dr lakshmi Kant Bajpai submitted a memorandum to the UP Governor, Mr Bl Joshi on Thursday demanding that he exercise his constitutional power and take a decision whether  the Akhilesh Yadav Government has the moral right to remain in power in Uttar Pradesh.

The three-page memorandum gave a detailed account of the rise in the graph of crime against women including rape and murder. lakshmi Kant Bajpai said as many as 57 criminal cases against women had come to light after the Badaun rape case. He alleged that controversial statements by the Director General of Police had brazened the criminals, who went off scot free after committing heinous crimes.

“The law and order situion has virtually crumbled in the state”, the leaders pointed out. THey said the Chief Minister, instead of taking stern steps to check the incidents of crime, he (the CM) was busy holding meetings.

Citing the incidents of crime, a BJP leader had been killed in MUzaffarnagar, while another BJP worker Punit Kumar was attacked in Bulandshahr. In Bahraich a woman was raped, murdered and hung on a tree. Another similar incident had occured in Moradabad. In Hamirpur a woman was allegedly raped by policemen.

The delegation of BJP leaders included Hardwar Dubey, Shiv Pratap Shukla, Gopal Tandon,Swatantra Dev Singh, Anul Gupta, Dr Samir Singh, Dr Chandra Mohan, Krishna Paswan, Devendra Singh Chauhan and Anita Agarwal.

Another delegation of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha led by Sonu Singh also met the Governor and sought security to the BJP leaders who were facing a threat to life.

While the BJP protested the poor law and order situation in the state, BSP chief Maywati had also demanded imposition of Presidents rule in the state saying that there was “jungle raj” in the Akhilesh Yadav regime.
