Oppn gearing up to corner Yogi govt

Published on:

Opposition parties are gearing up to corner the Yogi Adityanath government on law and order front during the brief monsoon session of Uttar Pradesh Assembly starting from August 23.

The opposition is likely to target the Bharatiya Janata Party government on issues like lynching in Hapur, sex racket in Deoria shelter home for girls and a series of incidents of attacks on traders and demand of extortion from them in Amethi, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur and other districts.

The monsoon session of the Assembly is also expected to witness bonhomie between the opposition parties to showcase their coming together for a ‘mahagathbandhan’ for the 2019 lok Sabha polls.

On the other hand, the government is bracing up to face the onslaught of the opposition. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna on Monday held marathon meetings with top officials of Home department and UP Police and sought details of all major crime incidents in the state since March 20, the last day of the Budget session.

To counter opposition onslaught on the incident of lynching in Hapur, the government is likely to raise the issue of recent murder of two temple priests in Auraiya for allegedly opposing cow-slaughter in the district.

The seven-day monsoon session will be a big opportunity for the opposition to raise their issues unitedly and make a big impact on the ruling BJP, which has a clear majority in the Assembly.

Though the strategy of the opposition parties will be chalked out on Tuesday in the meeting of opposition leaders in lucknow, law and order, cane farmers’ arrears and irregularities in shelter homes will be the keys issues to be raised.

leader of opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary of the Samajwadi Party said here on Monday that the opposition would raise people’s issues in a united way and would not spare the government.

Speaker Hriday Narayan Dikshit and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have also convened an all-party meeting on Tuesday afternoon for the smooth conduct of the session.

On August 23, the opening day of the session, both Houses are likely to be adjourned for the day after paying condolence to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The Speaker said on Monday that the first supplementary budget of the 2018-19 fiscal would be presented in the Assembly on August 27. He said the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Assembly will be held on Tuesday and an all-party meeting would also be held the same day.

The BAC will give a final shape to the agenda of the House for the session.

Dikshit said that ahead of the all-party meet, separate meetings would be held where Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, leader of opposition and leaders of other parties would be present.

He said that the meeting would discuss the strategy for smooth conduct of House proceedings.

The Speaker said that a meeting with Home department and police brass would also be held on Tuesday to review measures to be taken for the security of the Assembly building during the session.
