Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday announced that the farmers' agitation would continue till the three farm laws were not withdrawn.
Vadra, who visited Rampur to meet the family of Navreet Singh who was killed during farmers' tractor rally in New Delhi on the Republic Day, expressed her condolence and assured the victim's family that Navreet's martyrdom would not go waste.
After reaching the deceased's residence in Rampur, Vadra met the family members of the farmer in the Dibdiba village in Bilaspur tehsil and also attended the 'antim ardas' (prayer meeting) of the deceased.
The Congress leader later addressed a gathering and said that the martyrdom of Singh would not go in vain.
"The whole nation is with you. Everyone knows that farmers are being targeted by the government just to save their skin. To term farmers as terrorists is unacceptable," Vadra said.
She said that youths in large numbers had joined the agitation and Navreet was one of them. "His death is unfortunate but the country will never forget him," she said.
Claiming that the farmers' agitation had nothing to do with politics or political parties, Vadra said that the agitation had all the support of the political parties as it was a genuine protest and the government would have to withdraw the black farm laws.
"I am here to console the family members of Navreet and assure them that we are with them," she reiterated.
It may be noted that though the family members had said that it was not a political event but the prayer meeting was also attended by Samajwadi Party leader Ram Govind Chaudhary and Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Jayant Chaudhary. Several Congress leaders, including UPCC president Ajay Kumar Lallu were also present.
Earlier in the day, two accidents marred the visit of the Congress general secretary but luckily no one received any major injury. First, four cars of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's cavalcade hit each other in Hapur while she was on her way to Rampur to meet the family of Singh. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The four cars bumped into each other on National Highway-9 in Hapur district while the convoy was moving towards Rampur.
Later in another mishap, Priyanka's cavalcade met with another accident in Amroha. It is being said that a BJP leader's car collided with one of the cars of the Congress leader's convoy. No injuries were reported.
Navreet died in a freak tractor accident on January 26 during farmers' tractor rally in New Delhi. Earlier it was reported that he was killed by a bullet shot but the post-mortem revealed that he received severe head injury in the accident which led to his death
