Pulled up by the Chief Minister for the failure in preempting the protest by students of Nadwa College and Integral University over CAA, the Lucknow police launched a massive hunt for the violent protesters in Nadwa and arrested five of them on Tuesday.
The students had blocked the road outside the college on Monday morning, causing inconvenience to schoolchildren and also pelted the police personnel on duty with stones. The protest started on Sunday night but Hasanganj police’s failure in gauging the situation and initiating action led to a clash between police and students.
Hasanganj SHO Amarnath Verma said those arrested were identified as Faizi Ahmad aka Faraz of Hasanganj, Mohammed Ahmad of Madiaon, Mohammed Saud Qureshi of New Delhi and Arshad Mohsin of Bihar. Cases were registered against them at Hasanganj police station on Monday.
A police spokesman said Saud and Arshad are the students of Nadwa. “Both were staying in a rented house in Hasanganj locality and were involved in stone-pelting,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chowk police arrested a leader of All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Azizurrehman aka Khalid of Bazaarkahla for inciting a mob to block road while speaking against CAA at Nadwa. There were reports that Azizurrehaman was named in another case in Chowk a couple of days back. “The police probably did not initiate a preventive action against him and that was why he reached the scene where he incited the students,” the police spokesman said.
IG, Lucknow Range, SK Bhagat said, “A total of five trouble-makers were arrested for stone-pelting and preventing cops from discharging their duties.” The police zerod in on the protesters after scanning a number of CCTV footages from Nadwa and other establishments in the area.
