Mystery shrouds the death of two mentally challenged girls in a women’s protection home in Kotwali area in Rae Bareli on Saturday morning.Though the protection home staff claimed that the two girls died of illness, the local administration ordered a probe into the deaths to get at the truth and sent the bodies for post-mortem.

Reports said that 24-year-old Sita and 20-year-old Shalu, both inmates of the women’s protection home in Dhamsi Rai Ka Purva area of Rae Bareli, died in mysterious circumstances on Saturday morning. Protection home staff said both the girls were unwell and were undergoing treatment for the past one month. They said both had their breakfast in the morning after which they died.

Protection home’s caretaker Kanchan Verma said that the two girls were not taking meals properly for past several days because of their illness and this could have led to their death.

While ordering a probe, District Magistrate Anup Kumar Srivastava said that action would be taken against those found responsible. He said further action would be taken after receiving the autopsy report.
