An FIR was lodged by a Muslim man with Aligarh police after he was beaten up for reciting Ramcharitmanas in his house in Mahfooz Nagar locality under Delhi Gate police station.

Confirming the incident, Aligarh police on Friday said that they had registered the FIR on Thursday in which complainant Dilsher (55) alleged that his neighbours Sameer and Zakir along with others barged into his house and beat him up for reciting Ramcharitmanas.

Dilsher said the assailants also broke his harmonium and took away his copy of Ramcharitmanas. He alleged that before leaving, the assailants threatened him not to recite Ramcharitmanas ever again else his life would not be spared the next time.

Dilsher, a security guard in a factory, was reciting Ramcharitmanas after returning from night duty.

Dilsher said that he has been reciting Ramcharitmanas since 1979. “I recite the holy book after bathing and it gives me mental peace,” he told reporters in Aligarh on Friday.

Though the FIR has been registered, no action has been taken so far.
