Mob torches police outpost in Agra

Angered at the death of a youth in an accident while attempting to evade arrest, a large mob torched a police outpost leaving at least two cops injured in Agra on Thursday.

Earlier in the morning, a tractor-trolley carrying illegally mined sand was stopped at a police check post near Torah outpost in Tajganj police station area of Agra.

Instead of stopping, tractor driver Pawan of Karbana village, decided to make a run for it. Suddenly, he lost control over the vehicle and hurtled into a ditch and got crushed under the tractor.

The injured driver was somehow rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The news of Pawan’s death resulted in a crowd gathering at the hospital. The irate kin and friends assaulted police personnel present there and later marched to Torah police outpost. Once there, the mob set vehicles parked outside on fire. They also stormed the outpost, grabbed the wireless set and laptop along with CCTV disk before torching the building.

Later, the mob blocked the Fatehabad road. However, a large contingent of police rushed there and brought the situation under control.

IG of Agra Range, Satish Ganesh, later told media persons that a thorough probe would be conducted into the incident and illegal miners would not be spared.

Two constables injured in the violence were admitted to a hospital.

A case was registered and investigations were underway.
