A minor Dalit girl ended her life, allegedly due to inaction of the Barabanki police in her rape case.
It is alleged that the Haidergarh police did not take action against the person who raped the girl, due to which she hanged herself.
The girl was raped a week ago, after which the accused was threatening her.
The incident took place on Wednesday night and soon after learning of the death of the victim, the local police swung into action and claimed to have arrested the accused.
According to reports, on June 14 last, a minor Dalit girl residing in Haidergarh was raped by a youth. The girl filed a complaint about this incident at the police station but the cops did not register a case for two days. On June 17, on the orders of the superintendent of police, the police registered a rape case but did not arrest the accused.
The accused was continuously threatening the victim and her family members. Fed up with this, the teenager ended her life by hanging herself in the house on Wednesday night.
As soon as the information about this was received, hundreds of local residents and family members staged a protest, accusing the cops of inaction which forced the minor victim to end her life.
In the meantime, on learning about the girl’s death, the Haidergarh police also swung into action and took the accused into custody.
After getting information, Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar Singh along with police officers also reached the spot and pacified the relatives, claiming that stern action would be taken against all those responsible for the girl’s death.
The cops said that the girl ended her life as the accused was threatening to make some obscene video viral.
The police sent the body of the victim for autopsy.
Dinesh Kumar Singh said that the police had already got the medical examination of the girl done and her statement was recorded before a magistrate to take action but suddenly she ended her life.
Meanwhile, tension gripped Etawah’s Puthan Sakrauli village after a woman ended her life after an assault case was filed against her by a constable.
Outraged by victim Sapna’s death, villagers placed her body on the road outside the village, demanding action against the responsible officials.
Sapna consumed poison and died after an altercation between her and a police constable on Thursday morning.
The constable, who registered an assault case against her, alleged that Sapna was using a tractor (owned by her family) for illegal mining.
The mother-in-law of the victim, Sita Devi, alleged that the police constable physically assaulted Sapna after framing fake charges against her.
“The officials arrived when we were getting some soil delivered for my younger son’s wedding ceremony. They tried to seize our vehicle. We asked them to leave it, but they got violent. The police grabbed my daughter-in-law Sapna’s hand which led to arguments. The situation escalated but Sapna tried to convince the police constable that she was not involved in any mining,” Sita Devi said.
“The police then allegedly grabbed Sapna’s blouse, which compelled her to save her modesty," Sita Devi said. “They pressed a case of assault against her and then continuously harassed us. Even our house was vandalised. It has become difficult to live a peaceful life due to local police harassment, she said, alleging that just due to police ‘torture’, Sapna ended her life.
Sources said that the protest by local villagers led to a huge traffic blockade.
Sub-divisional magistrate (Sadar) and a heavy police force arrived at Sakrauli village to defuse the situation. In the meantime, former district president of the Bharatiya Janata Party also joined the protest, staging a sit-in with the aggrieved family and demanding action.
Subsequently, Superintendent of Police Kapil Dev Singh reached the spot and assured appropriate action against all those who would be found guilty.
Stating that an FIR was lodged following the altercation on June 6, Singh said, “The victim’s family suspects that Sapna took her own life due to alleged harassment. We will conduct a thorough investigation and take stringent legal action against anyone found guilty.”
Later, Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Verma suspended the accused constable, Vijay Kumar, and police outpost in-charge Ankit Patel.
The road blockade was later cleared and the body was sent for autopsy.
