All preparation has started for hanging serial killer Surendra Koli this month at the district jail in Meerut next week after a gap of 39 years.
Hangman Pawan, who would perform his first hanging, on Thursday inspected the platform and other arrangements at the Choudhury Charan Singh Meerut district jail. Jail officials said here that some minor repair works is required on the pillars and the platform, which will be completed within 2 days time. The last hanging was done in the jail in 1975 and Koli would be the 18 person to be hanged in the district jail.
Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) R R Bhatnagar claimed that the death sentence would be implemented between September 7 and 12.” The exact date would be finalized after all the preparation is completed,” he said. Hangman Pawan will peform his first hanging in his career where as his father Mammu hanged 12 people while his grand father hanged several criminals like Ranga and Billa and the killers of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi— Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh.
Pawan told reporters in Meerut that he was concentrating in performing his duty and continue the traditional work of his family. On Wednesday, the Ghaziabad court had issued the death warrant of
Koli, 42, given capital punishment in five cases of murder of small girls in Nithari area of Noida in 2006. Union Home ministry had turned down the mercy plea of Koli and the Presidential rejection came on July 27 last. There are still 11 cases of murder pending against Koli. CBI has filed charge sheet against him in 16 cases of murder of children after their sexual abuse.
Koli, a native of Nithari locality of Noida, was awarded death sentence by a lower court which was upheld by the Allahabad high court and confirmed by the Supreme Court on February 15, 2011, for the murder of Rimpa Halder in 2005.He is lodged in the Dasna jail in Ghaziabad.
The first hanging was performed in the Meerut jail way back in 1951 when a native of Kashipur, Nainital Roopkishore was hanged while the last was done in 1975 when Karam Singh of Muzaffarnagar was sent to the gallows.
