The state government sought guidelines from experts and hospital administrations to ensure that child death tragedies at BRD Medical College and Hospital in Gorakhpur on August 10 and 11 did not happen in future. A directive was given by Medical Education minister Ashutosh Tandon at a meeting held in lucknow on Friday.

The meeting was attended by Heads of 10 committees that was set up to evaluate and suggest way and means to improve working at state-run medical colleges and hospitals. Majority of the members were Heads of Different departments King George’s Medical university (KGMU) in lucknow.

“The committee should prepare a specific term of reference and after analyzing working of different hospitals should give practical suggestions for improvement in the working of state-run medical colleges and hospitals. If need be the committee can study arrangements of medical colleges and hospitals in Delhi, Benares Hindu University, Varanasi and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU),” the minister said.

Tandon said that the government was committed to providing better health care to the people and a repeat of BRD medical college could not be accepted any more.

“What happened in BRD College is shameful and now the government is taking corrective measures. The committee can also take help from other experts. But suggestions coming from the committee should be qualitative and should have clear cut road map and expected budget required to make effective changes in state-run colleges and hospitals,” he said.
