Mayawati hits out at UP govt for rising unemployment

Lashing out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati blamed the Yogi Adityanath government for rising unemployment among the youths and for forcing them to opt for manual labour like “frying and selling pakora”.

Holding the BJP-ruled Centre and previous Congress governments responsible for the current state of unemployment in UP, Mayawati tweeted that apart from constructing party offices, both parties did nothing for the state.

She warned that if the BJP progressed just like the Congress, India would never be “atma nirbhar” (self-reliant) and the ruling party would also meet the same fate which the Congress met by pushing the youths to unemployment.

As per the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) figures, UP’s unemployment has dipped to 6.9 per cent while the unemployment rates in Delhi and Rajasthan are 45.6 per cent and 27.6 percent respectively. Unemployment rate in West Bengal is 19.3 per cent, Tamil Nadu (28 per cent), Punjab (8.8 per cent), Jharkhand (16 per cent), Chhattisgarh (8.3 per cent), Kerala (23.5 per cent) and Andhra Pradesh (13.5 per cent). Earlier, amid the coronavirus pandemic lockdown in 2020, UP had recorded 17.5 per cent unemployment.

On its part, the UP government claimed that the Yogi regime's focus on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) has helped bring unemployment to a record low of 4.1 per cent in March. Under Mission Rojgar, various departments, institutions and corporations of the state are offering employment opportunities to the people.
