Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has expressed grief over the death of 25 people after part of a roof of a shelter on cremation ground collapsed on them when they assembled for attending the last rites of a person in Muradnagar in Ghaziabad district on Sunday.
Mayawati demanded proper and timely investigation into the incident.
Mayawati said on Twitter, “Nearly two dozen people in Uttar Pradesh died due to the collapse of the roof of the cremation ground in Muradnagar area of Ghaziabad district which is extremely painful and disturbing. I have full sympathy towards the families of the deceased victims and may God give them the strength to bear this loss.”
Taking to Twitter, Mayawati said, “Uttar Pradesh government should investigate this incident properly, timely and ensure strict punishment to its culprits. Do not save anyone and provide appropriate financial help to the victims’ families, this is the demand of the BSP.”
Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu also condemned the incident, saying it exposed corruption in the government departments.
“Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is making tall claims of zero tolerance towards corruption but in reality corruption is rampant in all the government departments and the Muradnagar incident is a glaring example of the large-scale swindling of government money that claimed over two dozen lives,” Lallu said.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh demanded that a case of murder be registered in the Muradnagar incident.
Singh said the incident was not a mishap but it was a “murder” caused by the corrupt practices of officials who got the shelter constructed.
He demanded compensation of Rs 1 crore each to the families of the deceased persons and Rs 10-15 lakh each to those injured in the incident.
Singh said the incident should be probed by a high-level committee instead of a Special Investigation Team.
