Mayawati attacks govt over drought package for farmers

Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Thursday attacked the Yogi Adityanath government, saying that the latest announcement of spending Rs 192 crore, i.e., only about Rs 38 crore per year, in the next five years for crop protection and storage in the vast state of farmer society was like cumin in the mouth of a camel.

The government should stop ignoring them. “In a state having a huge farmer community like Uttar Pradesh, the latest announcement of spending Rs 192 crore over the next five years, which is only about Rs 38 crore per year, for crop protection and storage appears meagre. The government should stop ignoring them too,” Mayawati tweeted in Hindi on Thursday morning.

Mayawati further tweeted that because of not getting remunerative price for their produce and cane arrears, the farmers of UP were very upset and a weak monsoon had added to their worries. She said the government should immediately start helping the farmers at every level to get them out of such a dire situation.

“Farmers of Uttar Pradesh are already in distress as they are not getting sugarcane arrears and remunerative prices for their produce. A weak monsoon now has increased their worries even more,” the BSP supremo said in the tweet in Hindi.

“The government should immediately start helping these farmers to get them out of such a dire situation. This is the demand of the BSP,” she said.

Significantly, 62 districts of Uttar Pradesh have received below average rainfall this year. The state government has ordered a survey to be conducted in all 75 districts of the state to deal with the drought situation, the report of which will be sent to the government by September 14.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath tweeted about this and said, “Dear annadata brothers, your government is sensitive to the situation arising out of below average rainfall in the state. Till further orders, the recovery of land revenue from farmers and irrigation charges from state tube wells will remain suspended. The electricity connection of any farmer's tube well will not be disconnected.”
