Maya trashes report on Muzaffarnagar riots

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati trashed the report of the one-man judicial commission on Muzaffarnagar communal riots of 2013 tabled in the Assembly on Sunday, terming it as an ‘eyewash’ and ‘intended to save the SP government’.

Mayawati said the Akhilesh Yadav government might be feeling a sense of relief following the report, but warned ‘it would have to face the consequences’.

Criticising the finding of the Vishnu Sahai judicial commission, the BSP leader said that it was set up to silence the Opposition, Mayawati alleged the report also proved that the work of judicial commissions was ‘not to punish the guilty and ensure justice to the affected people, but to give clean chit to the government’ and pointed out that even the Congress and the BJP governments had done similar things in the past.

She said that the time has come for ‘sarv samaj’, especially the Muslim community, to think what would be the value of their lives, property and faith if the SP government comes back to power.

“Ensuing security and justice for the poor, women, farmers, unemployed, dalits and minorities during the BJP rule at the Centre and SP regime in UP has become almost impossible. Keeping it in mind ‘the bitter truth’, these sections will have to be alert and take corrective political steps to protect their interests,” said the BSP chief.

Mayawati alleged that during the Muzaffarnagar riots, there were huge loss of life and property as there was a ‘clear understanding’ between the SP government and the BJP. She said that the attitude of the government towards people displaced due to the riots was ‘insensitive and inhumane’. “As far as ensuring justice to the affected people was concerned, the government failed to take action against BJP leaders found prima facie guilty,” Mayawati said.

“Due to the lackadaisical approach of the SP government, rioters and conspirators roamed like heroes. The one-man judicial commission that probed the communal riots has concluded intelligence failure and laxity of police as the factors responsible for the violence that left 62 dead. It also accused the media of exaggerating reports leading to violence. It is however silent on the role of the Akhilesh Yadav government in the conflagration,” concluded Mayawati.
