Maya supports food security bill

Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati extended support to Food Security Bill but criticised the manner in which the Congress Party brought out ordinance in a hurry without waiting for even Parliament session.

''Instead of ordinance, it should have been tabled in the Parliament which would bring out useful suggestions by all the parties,'' she said while having a praise for the Bill while talking to media persons here on Saturday. Declaring the BSP favoured the bill in principle, Mayawati said ''I am happy the better sense prevailed in the Congress and the Bill is going to a reality for the good of poors.'' The former UP chief minister said the Supreme Court has said two and a half year ago that the food grains were rotting and should be distributed among the poors. ''At that time, the Congress-led government kept mum but it is never late than never,''she pointed out.

lambasting the leaders who spoke about food being available in Rs 5 and Rs 12 in the country, she said these leaders had never seen the poverty hence issuing reckless statements.''These statements are like salt on the wounds of the poors,''she remarked. About recent survey showing increasing popularity of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, former chief minister dubbed them as a bundle of lies. ''I fail to understand the basis of these surveys and moreover, Modi has strong Opposition within the party,''she said. Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were fighting among themselves  over the prime ministership and in view of this, the surveys were absolutely meaningless, said the BSP supremo.
