Maya condemns Uri attack

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati condemned the terror attack on an Army base in Uri sector of Kashmir and stressed for a consensus on a long-term strategy to counter recurrence of such incidents in future.

In a statement released on Monday, Mayawati said that the country has enough strength to stop such incidents but a concerted effort with a consensus approach should be made to prevent these incidents. She also expressed her condolences to the families of the martyred jawans.

Expressing concern over disturbances in the Kashmir valley for the last two months, the BSP chief said that efforts should be made to normalize the situation besides safeguarding lives and properties of the natives.

Mayawati also criticized Haryana CM Manohar lal Khattar for making a frivolous statement on gang rape in Mewat. “The Prime Minister should take congizance of the Haryana CM’s insensitive statement and reprimand him. What is the use of starting a ‘beti-bachao-beti padhao’campaign from Haryana when the CM does not know how to show respect towards women,” she said.

At a function to celebrate 50 years of Haryana’s statehood on September 17, Khattar on being asked about the Mewat gang-rape and the beef-in-biryani controversy, had said, “These are ‘non-issues’. I don’t pay attention to these issues. We should be talking about Swarn Jayanti. Collecting samples of beef biryani and double murder cum gang-rape of two sisters are not issues according to me. “

The former UP Chief Minister said that such ‘anti-woman’ statement has only exposed the ‘real character and face’ of the BJP leaders.

Recalling a similar statement made by SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in the past, Mayawati said that it is the result of a chauvinistic mindset that incidents of sexual atrocities against women have spiked in UP.

Arguing against capital punishment for rape, Yadav had said in 2014, “ladke, ladke hain...galti ho jati hai (boys will be boys… they commit mistakes).”
