Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Tuesday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party and said that the remarks made by its MLA against the Prophet of Islam were shameful and condemnable. The BJP should work to salvage the image of the country by restraining its leaders, she said.
“The heated atmosphere created after the controversial remarks against the Prophet by Nupur Sharma, who was later suspended from the BJP, has not cooled down and now another BJP leader, Telangana MLA Raja Singh, has made similar kind of remarks which is very shameful and condemnable,” Mayawati said.
“Though the Telangana government has arrested the BJP MLA in Hyderabad, it is the responsibility of the BJP leadership to restrain its people to maintain peace in the country and maintain India’s progress abroad,” the BSP supremo said in a series of tweets on Tuesday.
The BJP has suspended its Telangana MP T Raja Singh amid furore over his comments against Prophet Mohammad. The Goshamahal MLA was arrested in Hyderabad on Tuesday following protests in various parts of the city over his remarks.
A day earlier, the politician had released a video criticising stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui (who recently performed in Hyderabad) and purportedly made some comments against his religion.
Earlier, an FIR was filed against Singh under various sections of IPC pertaining to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs and criminal intimidation.
