In a sensational incident, a man from Shahjahanpur set himself ablaze after police allegedly refused to file a complaint regarding his pickup van theft. He was rushed to a hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.
According to reports, Tahir Ali, a native of Sihran hamlet of Kant area in Shahjahanpur, was upset as the local police refused to register a case of his van theft. He also met senior officers but failed to get any relief. Depressed with the police behaviour, Tahir reached the superintendent of police office along with his children on Tuesday morning. He had already got his clothes drenched in some inflammable liquid.
After reaching the SP office, he first registered his protest and before anyone could sense foul play, he set himself ablaze. His children cried for help after which some visitors and policemen rushed to his rescue. They doused the fire and rushed Tahir to the hospital. Senior officers have ordered a probe into the incident.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav shared a purported video of this incident on social media on Tuesday.
Taking to X, Akhilesh said, “The youth who set himself on fire in front of the SP office due to the non-registration of a report of pickup van theft in Shahjahanpur should be provided with immediate top-notch medical facilities, and a case should be filed against those who incited him to set himself ablaze. Even when the FIRs are so minimal, the law and order in Uttar Pradesh appear to be deteriorating in the NCRB report. If every crime is reported, I don’t know if the so-called ‘Amrit Kaal’ will commit suicide out of shame in Uttar Pradesh.”
