Man arrested on fake passport case

High drama marked the arrest of a middle-aged man at lucknow airport on Tuesday evening. The man in question was wanted in connection with a fake passport case by the Telengana Police.

While UP’s Anti-Terrorists Squad (ATS) was quick to jack the credit for the arrest with assistance from the Telngana Police, it later surfaced that the 54-year-old man was deported from Saudi Arabia escorted by security and was handed over to the Indian cops at the lucknow airport.

As per reports, Abdul Aziz aka Aziz aka Asharfi, a native of Hyderabad, was deported from Saudi Arabia after undergoing an eight-year prison term for possessing a fake passport. He was arrested soon after he landed in lucknow airport on Tuesday evening. Aziz was later produced in a local court and the Telangana Police procured a transit remand before leaving for Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Earlier in 2001, Aziz was arrested by Hyderabad Police in a fake passport case but he jumped bail and slipped to Saudi Arabia. In 2003-2004, he was trying to go to Iraq with the help of the fake passport when he was nabbed and was handed out a eight year jail term. IG (law and order), Bhagwan Swaroop said that that Aziz was also wanted for conspiracy to plant a bomb in a temple in Telangana. “There are no inputs of his being linked to any terror group. But he had been to Bosnia and Chechnya in the past and might have come in contact with ultras there,” he said.
